Ensign close the gap on league-leaders as Wivenhoe, Ramblers and Coggeshall all win

There was plenty on movement in the Eastern Counties League Division One South as Burnham Ramblers, Coggeshall United, White Ensign and Wivenhoe Town all picked up wins on Saturday.

White Ensign went level on points with league-leaders Little Oakley with a 2-1 win over Frenford. The win also saw Ensign leap-frog Frenford into second-place with a game in-hand on Oakley and two games on Frenford. Connor Barnby opened the scoring before Charlie Heatley brought the hosts level. A last minute goal from Dominic Locke was enough as Ensign snatched the points.

Both Burnham Ramblers and Coggeshall United also made moves up the table. Ramblers were up to 9th with a 3-1 win over May & Bakers with goals from Jacob Cleaver, Albert Galbally and Justin Bailey whilst Coggeshall were up to 11th with a 2-1 victory over Athletic Newham as Lewis Soraf and Eligijus Bulauka were on target for the Weavers.

It was also a good day for Wivenhoe Town as they rose to 8th in the league table. Despite Benfleet taking the lead through Ben Foord, a brace from Karl Swanborough and Ross James was enough for the 3-points and their 4th win of the season.

It wasn’t all victories as two games saw the spoils shared. Hackney Wick weren’t able to make it back-to-back victories over Brimsdown as they were held 2-2 by the North London side. Goals for Malik Donaldson and Leon Lewis meant ‘Down were able to take a point with 16-year old Nicollas Freitas scoring for the hosts whilst Harwich & Parkeston were held at home by Barkingside. 10-man Harwich had taken the lead through Jamie Beecham but it wasn’t enough as James Peagram was on target for ‘Side.
