The FA Vase Fifth Round comes to Brickfield Lane as Hadley face Binfield for a place in the Quarter-finals.
On Saturday Afternoon, Essex Senior League side Hadley will welcome Hellenic League Premier Division side Binfield to Brickfield Lane, Barnet in the Buildbase FA Vase Fifth Round as the Step-5 side battle for a place in the last-8.
The hosts have already beaten their best FA Vase runs; reaching the Second Round Proper in both the 2009/10 and 2013/14 season, but now sit 1-game off the Quarter-finals.
Their run began back in September as the Bricks welcomed their namesake Hadleigh [United] to Brickfield Lane in the First Qualifying Round. Both Luke Alfano and Alfie Bartram were on target that day as they won 2-nil before facing Step-6 Enfield Borough in the Second Qualifying Round. A goal from Billy Baird wasn’t enough to see Hadley through as they needed penalties to settle the tie, winning 8-7 from the spot.
In the First Round Proper, the Bricks hosted their third game of the competition as they welcomed Southern Combination Premier Division side Pagham, with the Bricks taming the Lions. The game finished 2-1 with Shehzad Anwar and Solomon Ofori scoring the goals. Hadley recorded their highest attendance of this years competition as 179 spectators witnessed a 4-1 win against Raynes Park Vale at Brickfield Lane. Against Park Vale, Ofori was on target twice with a brace while Luke Alfano and Teddy Stacey also netted as Hadley reached the furthest they have ever reached in the competition.
The run hadn’t ended their though and just before the Lockdown in December, 150 spectators witness the Bricks edge past Colney Heath in the Third Round Proper. It was another game where Hadley required a penalty shootout but held their nerve and won 4-1 from the spot, following a goalless draw. When football returned, Hadley didn’t have their fans to cheer them on as they made the trip to Borough Sports Ground to face Sutton Common Rovers in their only away trip of this years Vase so far. Playing behind closed doors didn’t faze the ESL side as Alfano, Anwar and Baird helped the Bricks onto a 3-1 win.
Binfield have only played 3-Vase games this season as they started their run in the Second Round Proper. The Moles travelled to the Trafalgar Ground to face Newhaven in their first game. A Sean Moore brace wasn’t enough to send them through in normal time as they reverted to a shootout win, winning 4-1 from the spot.
The visitors had to wait until the return of football to play their Third Round tie as they travelled to the Charles Sports Ground to face Step-5 Deal Town. The Moles had a more comfortable game, winning 4-1 with Oliver Harris notching two and Josh Helmore and Sean Moore also netted, setting up a tie with Fakenham Town. In their last game, Binfield travelled for the third time as they need penalties again to beat the Norfolk side. Josh Helmore scored a double but it wasn’t enough to send them through, drawing 2-2 after 90-minutes. The Moles didn’t quite require the ghostbusters as a 4-1 win from a penalty shootout was enough to send the Ghosts packing. The road to the Fifth Round has seen the Hellenic League side have their longest run, previously reaching the Fourth Round twice; 2011/12 and 2019/20.
