Canvey Island progressed to the FA Cup Second Round Proper, knocking out higher opposition in the process as they beat Banbury United 2-1. Goals from Connor Hubble and Elliott Ronto were enough for the Islanders despite a goal for the hosts.

Both sides tried to get off to the best possible start but it was Canvey who came forward earliest. Connor Hubble lined-up a free-kick but it was just over the bar before a cross was claimed by Jack Harding. Banbury did have the ball in the back of the net in the 7th-minute but it was ruled out for a foul by Ricky Johnson. The game was fairly even as both sides tried to bring the ball forward. A header was flicked onto the roof of the net from the hosts before Curtis Morrison did well to win a corner but nothing came from the set-piece.

Tobi Joseph forced a good save from Harding before it was the visitors who took the lead. Connor Hubble used good footwork to create some space on the edge of the box before firing a shot beyond Harding. Banbury were looking for an equaliser. A ball from a corner found Jack Self but he sent his effort wide before Pablo Haysham made a good run before moving the ball on. He received it back, having continued his run but his shot was deflected out of play before the hosts couldn’t take advantage of a series of corners.

As the half neared half-time, Canvey looked to double their lead. There was plenty of space for Evans Kouassi but his shot from the edge was well gathered by Harding. Banbury wondered how they hadn’t equalised; a shot rattled the bar before there was a scramble in the Canvey box. Bobby Mason managed to get a hand to the ball before a couple of blocks prevented an equaliser. The move was ended with the ball hitting the post before going out of play. Banbury were knocking on the door at the end of the first-half but couldn’t get the equaliser before the break.

Banbury began the second-half the quickest as they looked for an equaliser. Langmead latched onto a Pablo Haysham ball but he could only send his header over the bar before the hosts applied good pressure but Canvey defended well. Canvey were awarded an indirect free-kick as the referee deemed Harding to have handled a back pass. The free-kick from inside the box was pulled back to the edge with Jack Self getting a toe to it to clear it off the line.

The hosts continued to come forward as they looked for a leveller. Brown launched a long throw into the box. There were shouts handball but the referee wasn’t interested before Landers fired a shot wide. The pressure from Banbury paid off as they were level in the 68th-minute. Good play for the hosts allowed a low cross to be fired in with captain Ricky Johnson flicking the ball beyond Bobby Mason. A minute later, the hosts almost took the lead as Self fired just over the bar before Landers slide in but couldn’t get enough on the ball. Instead, it was Canvey who re-took the lead as Elliott Ronto fired the ball beyond Harding inside a crowded area. Kouassi almost extended the lead a couple of minutes later as he picked up the ball on the edge of the area but his effort was inches wide.

Banbury continued to come forward but they couldn’t find a second equaliser. Amer Awadh was denied by Mason with a good shot before an effort was sent wide of the target. As the game moved into the final 10-minutes, Landers tried to volley the bar but his effort was just over the bar. James Constable applied some good pressure as he looked for the head of a teammate but Ricky Johnson’s header was just over the bar. With a minute to play, the hosts had a huge chances as Giorgio Rasulo line-up a free-kick but his effort was well defended by Canvey. The hosts had another free-kick in added time but it just wasn’t their day as Canvey progressed in the FA Cup.
