Coggeshall United progressed to the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Vase as they beat Barkingside at Cricklefields. Goals from Mwetsi Matangi and Alex Owuadey were enough despite a late fight back from the hosts.
It was Side’ who started off the strongest as they came forward in the opening minutes. David Etcheri had the first shot of the game but he fired his shot over from distance before a shot from close range was saved on the line and cleared, away from danger. Coggeshall grew into the game as they looked to come forward themselves. A cross from the right-hand side was well collected by Duncan Smith. Coggeshall were awarded a penalty as Mwetsi Matangi was brought down by Smith and Matangi stepped up himself. Initially it looked like he had missed as the ball rattled the post and he sent a second attempt wide but the linesman awarded a goal, claiming the ball had crossed the line as it hit the post.
Barkingside tried to come forward as they looked for a quick response. A header was blocked on the line before they picked up possession but the shot was fired over. They also had a couple of corners but they were dealt well with by Coggeshall. The visitors were forced into a first half change as the goalscorer Matangi was replaced by Alex Owuadey. Side’s Joe Gent tried to lob Lewis Down in the Coggeshall goal as the visitor keeper came off his line but the effort was just wide.
It was Coggeshall who finished the half the strongest as they looked to double their lead. Owuadey made a good run down the right-hand side before he crossed towards Skirmantas Bulauka but the forward missed his header before Eligijus Bulauka’s shot was saved comfortably by the keeper. A free-kick was also whipped in from Toby Barlow but the keeper held on well.
Coggeshall had made it difficult for Barkingside as they doubled their lead in the opening minutes of the second half. Hussainou Jaffa made a good run and fed the ball through to Alex Owuadey who slotted past the keeper. Minutes later, they were almost through again but Smith had collected the ball off of Jaffa’s toes. Although they found themsleves 2-0 down, Barkingside still continued to look for a goal. Reece Simpson and James Holland chased ball in behind but they were well shepparded by Coggeshall as they looked to keep Side’ out. Joe Gent was pulled back as he chased a ball but it was ignored by the referee before the keeper almost gifted Side’ a goal as he miskicked a clearance but he made amendes before Gent could profit.
Owuadey almost had his second of the night when he was played through but Smith did well to tip his effort over the bar from close range. Down the other end, Side’ finally got their goal as Reece Simpson scored. He control a cross well before turning and firing his shot past Down. The goal really opened the game as both sides had chances. A shot from Coggeshall was just over before a cross from Side’ was just behind the forward and the keeper held onto a volley from the hosts.
As the game reached the last 10-minutes, Barkingside continued to push. Coggeshall had almost put themselves two-goals ahead when Skirmantas Bulakua tried to lob Smith but the shot was just over. Side’s Daniel Jones miskicked a volley as he looked to go for the spectacular from the edge of the box before he had a shot blocked in a crowded box and Glen Warwick fired a shot over from distance. Coggeshall continued to hold on as the game entered injury-time with Barkingside pushing for a late goal. Instead, it was Coggeshall who scored in the 95th-minute as an goalkeeping error gifted Owuadey his second of the game. He rounded the keeper after picking up the ball and slotted home to send the visitors through.
