Cockfosters beat West Essex by a goal to nil as they welcomed them to Chalk Lane for an Essex Senior Clash. West Essex had a chance to move above Walthamstow into third but the win for the home side means that they rose to 8th.
A quick start from both sides saw a chance for either side but neither could find the target with Billy Healey and Michael Mignot both driving efforts wide.
The opening minutes saw West Essex dominate but they couldn’t find a goal. Michael Mignot caused the defence all sorts of issues and had a few chances. He flicked the ball towards goal from a corner but was denied by the keeper before he saw a shot blocked and deflected wide and a shot from the edge of the box saved comfortably.
As the first half went on, Cockfosters began to grow in the game. Billy Healey tried his luck from distance after noticing the keeper off his line but fired it well wide before Reece Mosanya’s effort was superbly saved by Jack Coker. The hosts also had a penalty shout for handball but the referee was unmoved and it wasn’t given. Despite chances for both sides, the teams went into the break level.
Both sides tried to start quickly in the second half but it was the visitors who had the earliest chances. A ball played across the face of goal reached a West Essex player at the back post but he could fire it over before a number of blocks and good saves denied the visitors.
West Essex came closest to scoring when Michael Mignot saw a curling effort hit the up-right and bounce away from the goal before Cockfosters broke the deadlock 5 minutes later. A nice pull back to Ned Clarke saw him tuck it past Brad Robinson. The goal gave Cockfosters confidence as they pushed for another goal but they couldn’t break through a strong West Essex defence.
West Essex were reduced to ten men when Michael Mignot kicked a Cockfosters player high and late to which the referee deemed it enough for a straight red but despite all chances, the game ended with the hosts winning 1-0.
