Following Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Saffron Walden Town, Walthamstow face another game on the road as they make their way across East London to the Terence McMillan Stadium to take on Clapton.
Walthamstow currently sit in 4th-place after 9-games, having won 6 and lost 3. The season began with a 3-1 win at the Mile End Stadium against Sporting Bengal United. Stow returned home for the next two games but it was two defeats as Stansted and Southend Manor took the points before the Stags got back to winning ways against West Essex on the road. The win against West was the first of 3-wins in a row as Walthamstow also recorded wins over Hashtag United and Woodford Town at Wadham Lodge. The 3rd loss of the season came at the hands of Hoddesdon Town who ran out 4-2 winners at Lowfield but Stow bounced back with two huge wins, beating Sawbridgeworth Town 7-0 before beating Saffron Walden on the road.
Last season, Walthamstow were completing for the title. After 26 games, they sat in 3rd having won 20, drew 3 and lost 3. Walthamstow had began the 2019/20 season with a 12-game unbeaten run including 1 draw which span until November when they recorded their lost loss against Takeley. Despite getting back to winning ways against Southend Manor, the second loss of the season soon following with another 1-0 but this time against Hashtag United. Stow went on another unbeaten run with 9 wins and 1 draw before the last game they played before the season was voided was a 2-1 defeat away to Hashtag United. Although Stow were only 3-points behind Walden and 2 behind Hashtag both Stow and the Tags had games in-hands on Walden, 3 to be exact going into the last couple of months of the season.
Clapton 17th in the league after 10-games, with a record of drew 4 and lost 6. The season didn’t get off to a bad start for Clapton as they picked up a huge point against Stansted on the road before drawing with Sawbridgeworth Town. Their first loss of the season was a heavy thrashing against Cockfosters before they picked up another point against St Margaretsbury but their second loss of the season was another trashing, this time against Saffron Walden Town. The first home game of the league season was draw against Hoddesdon Town but it was the last points they would pick up as they last four games have ended in defeat; they lost 5-1 against Takeley before also losing 2-1 to Redbridge, 3-0 to Hashtag United and 5-1 to Enfield.
Last season, Clapton were 12th when the season was brought to an abrupt end. After 27-games, they had won 9, drew 4 and lost 14 whilst scoring 40 and conceding 59. Clapton got off to the perfect start in the 2019/20 season as they beat Sporting Bengal United 3-1. They never really picked up form with their biggest winning run limited to two-games whilst they suffered 4-games on the bounce at one part of the season. With teams around them having games in-hand, it likely Clapton would have dropped a few places in the table had the season continued.
The played two-games last season with Walthamstow coming out on top in both. The game at Wadham Lodge ended in a 2-1 victory for Walthamstow before the game at Southchurch Park, the temporary home of Clapton during the 2019/20 season, which ended in a 6-2 win for Stow despite the hosts taking a early 2-0 lead. This will certainly be a tough game for both sides as Walthamstow will look to close the gap on Hashtag United at the top-of-the-league whilst Clapton will hope to stun Walthamstow and pick up their first win of the season.
