Harlow Town Ladies will begin their 2020/21 season with a trip to Runwell Sports in the FA Women’s Cup. After 4 pre-season friendlies, the Lady Hawks turn their attention to the FA Cup before they begin their new league campaign.
It was a pre-season that allowed Harlow to dust off the cobwebs following the country being in lockdown as they looked to find their form from last season whilst gelling with the new players. The Ladies began pre-season with a visit to Leigh-on-Sea to face Leigh Ramblers. The game finished 2-0 to Harlow before the club welcomed three other sides to their ground. First, Hackney Lionesses were invited down for a game which Harlow won 12-0 before they beat Oakland Wolves 5-2 on a wintry night. After a late friendly was arranged against National League Portsmouth Women, Town pulled off an inspirational performance, hold the higher tier side to a 1-1 draw.
The performance in the FA Cup last season saw Harlow Ladies reach the third qualifying before their defeat to Billericay Town. Dean Perrett had led the ladies through three rounds before it was brought to an end in their 4th-round. They had thrashed AFC Sudbury 8-0, before beating King’s Lynn Town 3-1 and notching a winner in extra-time against Wroxham to win 4-3. As much as it was disappointing to narrowly lose against Billericay, the ladies could be proud of what they achieved and will look to do it all again this season. A good run in the FA Cup will also give the players confidence as they try to focus on promotion in the League.
Runwell Sports Ladies are currently one level below the Eastern Region Women’s Football and two levels below Harlow Ladies as they play their football in the Essex County Women’s Football League. They were due to play three friendlies but only two were played. They ran out 10-0 winners over them before they played out a 2-2 draw with Southend United. They were also due to play Frontiers Ladies but this game was abandoned due to the weather.
It will be a tough game for both sides. Harlow Town are expected to be competing for the League title once again, in the hope of becoming a National League side. Harlow also don’t know too much about tomorrow’s opponents as this will be the first meeting between the clubs.
