Preview: Walthamstow vs London Lions

Walthamstow completed their pre-season with a fantastic draw against Isthmian League Premier Division side Enfield Town as they look ahead to the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round. In the qualifying round, they face Spartan South Midlands League side London Lions.

Stow enjoyed a good cup run last season as they reached the 2nd qualifying round. After a 5-0 thrashing of fellow-ESL side Sporting Bengal United, Walthamstow went on to play two sides in the leagues above. In the Preliminary round, they welcomed Great Wakering Rovers to the Lodge and won 2-0 before facing Aylesbury United in the next round away from home, winning 3-0. Having reached the second qualifying round, they were drawn at home to Abbey Rangers. The game finished 1-1 and went to a replay which was won by Rangers.

This season sees an almost completely new Walthamstow team. Pre-season, despite the results, was a good show of what is to come from Walthamstow. Max Mitchell used pre-season to gel the players and pick his best team, with competitive football right round the corner. Stow have beaten Harpenden Town, Halstead Town and drew with Enfield Town while losing to Bearsted, Wingate & Finchley, Barking and Welwyn Garden City.

London Lions didn’t feature in last season’s FA Cup competition but have done so in the past. Last season, they finished 8th Division One of the Spartan South Midlands League but could have finished higher as they had 4 games in hand over Shefford Town & Campton. They had won 11, drew 6 and lost 10 of their 27 games.

The Lions have enjoyed an unbeaten pre-season as they look to take that into Tuesday. They began with a 6-0 victory over Hatfield United before beating Cockfosters and Harpenden Town. It wasn’t an all-winning run as they drew with London Colney but it was ended by a 5-1 win over Welwyn Garden City U23’s.

The winner of the tie will face either Cockfosters or Stanway Rovers at home in the Preliminary Round. It should be a good game!
