Preview: Walthamstow vs Sawbridgeworth Town

Following the midweek defeat to Hoddesdon Town, Walthamstow will welcome Sawbridgeworth Town to Lodge on Saturday, as they look to get back to winning ways.

Walthamstow currently sit in 6th place after 7-games having won 4 and lost 3. The season began with a 3-1 victory over Sporting Bengal United at Mile End before facing Stansted and Southend Manor at home. Both games ended in defeat as the Airportmen won 2-1 and Manor won 3-2. Stow got back to winning ways as they beat West Essex 3-2 at Mayesbrook Park before beating Hashtag United 2-1 at the Lodge. The last game saw the Stags lose 4-2 against a good Hoddesdon side.

Last season, Walthamstow were fighting for the title. After 26 games, they were 3rd. They had won 21, drew 2 and lost 3 whilst scoring 73 and conceding 17. Above them, Hashtag United were 2nd, 2-points ahead and Saffron Walden Town sat top-of-the-league, 3-points ahead of Walthamstow but both Hashtag and Stow had 3-games in-hand on Walden.

Sawbridgeworth find themselves 11th, having played 8-games. They have won 2, drew 2 and lost 4. They began the season with a 5-2 win over Southend Manor at Southchurch Park before they drew with 1-1 with Clapton at home. The Robins had another two homes games, recording one win and one loss. They beat Woodford Town 3-2 before losing 4-2 to Hashtag United. Sawbo travelled to Takeley but were defeated 7-2 before they picked up a good point against Saffron Walden Town. Their last two-games have seen them lose against Enfield and Redbridge. They were defeated 4-0 away to the E’s before losing 4-1 at home to the Motormen.

The Robins had a season to forget last year as they found themselves rock-bottom and 14-points adrift from safety. After 28-games, they had won 2, drew 2 and lost 24 whilst scoring 30 but conceding 99. The majority of teams above them had games in-hand over Sawbo, making it difficult for survival. They were only saved by the null and voiding of the season.

The clubs only played one game last season as Stow won 4-0 in the League in February. Regardless of last season, this will certainly be a tough game.
