Both Walthamstow and Sporting Bengal United begin their FA Cup campaign tomorrow in the Extra Preliminary round at Wadham Lodge. Both teams compete in the Essex Senior League but who will come out on top?
Wadham Lodge, the home of Walthamstow FC, will be the venue for the FA Cup clash between Walthamstow and Sporting Bengal United as they compete to reach the Preliminary round to face Great Wakering Rovers. Both sides began their league campaign with a win and will look to bring that into this game for confidence and form.
Walthamstow thrashed Tower Hamlets 7-0 and were denied first place by Woodford Town who had been Sawbridgeworth Town 8-0 before they had a rest day earlier this week (as the League only has 19 teams). Sporting Bengal, on the other hand, have played twice already in the league. A single goal was enough to see them beat Southend Manor on the opening day before they lost 3-1 to Clapton on Tuesday.
In terms of favourites for this one, you’d have to say Walthamstow, who are one of the favourites to lift the Essex Senior League trophy. Although, you can’t be certain of a Stow win as the FA Cup is known for it’s ‘magic’.
Last season saw Walthamstow reached the first round qualifying but lost 2-0 to Beaconsfield Town after doing well to beat Walsham Le Willows (3-1 at Home) and Felixstowe and Walton United (0-1 away) compared to Sporting Bengal who only managed to reach the Preliminary round and lost 3-1 at home during a replay against Brentwood Town following a win against Ilford (4-3) and a draw against their replay opponents (1-1).
This game will certainly be an opportunity for both teams to progress against familiar opposition before facing tougher opponents in the latter rounds and should be an entertaining game.
