Preview: Walthamstow vs Woodford Town

Following Walthamstow’s exit from the FA Cup on Saturday, their attentions will now turn to the league as they welcome Woodford Town to the Lodge.

Stow currently sit 8th after 5 games, having won 3 and lost 2. The Stags had began the season with a win at Mile End against Sporting Bengal United, winning 3-1, before facing two defeats at home. Stansted were victorious by 2-goals to one before Southend Manor stunned Walthamstow with a 3-2 win. Those defeats were put behind them with a win away against West Essex and a home win over Hashtag United. West had taken a 2-0 lead but 3-goals in the first half for Stow were enough for a narrow win before a late-goal from Michael Toner saw the Stags claim the three-points in a 2-1 win.

Last season, Walthamstow were one of the favourites to go up as they fought alongside Hashtag United and Saffron Walden Town for the title and promotion. When the season was voided, Walthamstow were third after 26-games; 2-points behind Hashtag United and 3-points behind league-leaders Saffron Walden Town. Stow and Hashtag United had 3-games in hand on Walden going into the final months of the season.

Woodford have faced a very tough season so far, sitting rock-bottom after losing all-5 of their league games. The season began with a 4-0 loss against Hadley before they narrowly lost 2-1 to Southend Manor and 3-2 to Sawbridgeworth Town. The woods then faced defeat at home to Redbridge before St Margaretsbury claimed the three-points with a 2-1 win over Woodford.

The Woods were mid-table last season, sitting 9th after 28 games. They had won 10, drew 4 and lost 14. Woodford Town were top-of-the-league on the opening day having beaten Sawbo 8-0 but after a mixed season, they were due to finish mid-table.

The teams only met once last season with Walthamstow winning 2-0 at home against Woodford Town last November. The last-meeting was played in difficult conditions which Stow adapted to the better but this will be another tough game with Stow looking to push on in the league whilst Town looking for their first points of the season.
