Cockfosters and Southend Manor failed to build on their opening day wins as the sides drew a stalemate at Chalk Lane on Tuesday Evening.
It had taken the game around 30-minutes to kick into life as both sides struggled to test the opposition keeper. Both teams looked to break the deadlock, but neither could as the defences stood strong.
Cockfosters had applied early pressure as they sought the opening goal, but they were unable to test the Manor goal. Luke Marshall looked to deliver a cross, but he miscued his kick and it went out of play before they called for handball as the ball was struck at a visiting player from close range inside the box, but the referee waved the shouts away. Southend Manor had their chances too, but also struggled to test the man between the sticks. They had looked to cross balls into the box, but couldn’t create clear cut chances while Jordan Chambers made a superb run forward, but couldn’t get a shot off as the Fosters defence smothered the attack.
When the game had kicked into life, it was the visitors who were on the attack, seeking the opening goal of the game. Luca Franks looked to fed the ball into the path of Chambers, but the ball was collected by the keeper, before the ball fell to the latter, but his shot from just inside the box, was blocked. Down the other end, a ball had been crossed towards the near post, but Billy Healey’s header was inches wide of the target.
As the game neared the end of the first half, both sides had more good chances to score, but neither could. Southend Manor had looked to bring the ball forward, but struggled to break down the home defence, while Healey fired an effort over and the hosts wondered how they hadn’t taken the lead as Chancey Dash picked up the ball in the box, but his effort was fired wide from close range.
The visitors had the first chance of the second half as Franks turned in the box and fired a shot at goal, but his shot was caught by the keeper on the line before Fosters had their opening attack of the second period a couple of minutes later as Dash laid the ball off to Healey, but his effort was dragged wide.
The game became open as both sides continued to attack. Luca Franks fired an effort wide from the edge of the box while Reece Mosanya looked to cross the ball, but the Manor keeper comfortably collected the ball. The visitors had another good chance as an effort was cleared off the line before Fosters found a foothold in the game as the game approached the last 20-minutes.
George Beattie had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock, but the forward flashed a shot inches wide of the far post from distance before Prince Madu crossed the ball to Dash, but the attacker couldn’t quite get his shot away as the keeper was quickly off his line and Marcus Crowther got on the end of a cross, but he could only head his effort wide. Manor looked to ease the pressure from the constant Fosters attacks as they looked to come forward themselves. Luca Franks had another effort on goal and forced the keeper to tip the ball onto the crossbar.
The visitors had a faint shout for a penalty in the 84th-minute as the attacker felt impeded, but the referee was quick to wave the shouts away. With minutes left to play, it was Cockfosters who looked most like scoring. Jack Hockney looked to be through on goal but took his shot early and the keeper comfortably held onto the ball before the ball fell to Crowther after Hockney had made a good run, but his shot was fired over from close range.
It was last chance saloon for the hosts as the game ticked over into injury-time. A free-kick was floated towards goal, but the keeper held onto the flicked header. As the game reached the 6th added-minute, the hosts were hoping the game would continued as they had a series of corners. The closest they went from the set-pieces saw Dash launch himself at the ball with a diving header, but the ball was scooped off the line before the final effort a minute later was wide of the target.
